As the hours tick off the clock, there you sit scouring the internet for the best gun safe reviews you can find. We all love to search through this minefield we call the internet to find the occasional gem.
Let me tell you something.
You found it. These are the best gun safe reviews that I’ve seen compiled anywhere and my goal is to share them with you. If you’ll indulge me, I’ll walk you through the different types of gun safes, various brands, as well as features that will make your head spin.
Ok… I will also recommend a few of the safes that I feel stick out above the crowd.
Protection is Paramound in Gun Ownership
If you have guns in your house and don’t have a gun safe, then it’s time to buy one. Thankfully you know that; that’s why you’re here. The best gun safe will keep your guns out of the wrong hands. Children in your household will not be able to access your weapons, and neither will burglars and other home invaders. Should you need to defend yourself and your family, a quality gun safe will make your guns easily accessible to you.
…this is the point we start from when thinking through this gun safe enigma.
When you are shopping for the best gun safe, you will need to familiarize yourself with the features and options for gun safes, and also check out gun safe reviews. Gun safe reviews will help you to better understand the features, pros and cons of a given safe, and will also teach you about the real-life experiences of customers just like you.
Key Characteristics To Make Your Safe Fit Your Needs
- The construction of a gun safe is one of the most basic and essential features. Any gun safe you are thinking of purchasing should have a thick steel door and walls. As steel is heavy, you are looking for a heavy safe. Those which use concrete amalgamate to provide fire insulation are even heavier. A lightweight safe is not what you want.
- Also avoid those which use fireboard, drywall, or fiberboard to provide insulation if you can (though this is so common these days you may not be able to steer clear). The concrete amalgamate will provide the best protection and should be your top choice.
- The best locks are UL rated. Locks which do not have this rating are often imported from China and pretty easy to get past.
- Do look for a safe with a high-quality biometric electronic lock. These are easier and faster to open, and you can reset the combination yourself without relying on a locksmith. You can program them to open for multiple users.
- Look for a safe with re-lockers.
- Think about where your safe will go, and make sure you buy one with the proper dimensions. Once you do get it, bolt it down to the floor or wall.

And Now... Onto The Specific Safes We Recommend
Browning Gun Safes: SP23 Gloss Black – Electronic Lock Safe
“Pro Series Safes incorporate all of Browning’s most trusted security features, plus a heavy duty 3/16″ steel body for unmatched strength. The outer finish is flawless and surrounds a luxurious appointed interior that is versatile and beautiful.” – The browning website
Browning is a top-notch gun safe manufacturer, producing military-grade safes you can rely on. For whatever reason, they sell most of their safes through their own website. One safe you can purchase on the site is the SP23. This is a pricey safe, retailing in the $1,500-$2,000 range (watch out for the shipping, which can run several hundred dollars).
It features 12-gauge security, will protect the contents from fire for 60 minutes, and can store up to 25 weapons. Additional features include a force deflector, DPX, 180 degree heavy duty hinges, and a reinforced door frame. This gun safe is UL-approved. Like most Browning gun safes, this one is an excellent choice if you are looking for a serious safe for a large number of weapons.
Amazon also only carries several models by Liberty. Here is one to take a look at. The 24 Gun Liberty Safe is a less expensive alternative to the Browning above. It has military-style lock bars, a composite fire door, and 180-degree door hinges.
This Liberty gun safe has a 24-gun capacity, making it comparably sized, and will keep the contents safe for half in hour in case of a fire. An electronic lock is included.
Winchester Gun Safes: Winchester Ranger Deluxe 19 Gun Safe
There is a wider selection of Winchester gun safes on Amazon.com. There are a couple which caught our attention, in particular the Winchester Ranger Deluxe 19 Gun Safe. This is a highly rated item, with customer reviews averaging out to 4.5 stars out of 5.
These great safes come in somewhere a bit north of a grand but are worth it if you need the capacity and want the quality. While its capacity is slightly smaller than the two safes discussed above, it should still be plenty big for many gun collectors.
It provides up to an hour of fire protection, though it does rely on three layers of fireboard to do so. Other features include a three spoke vault handle, four way locking bolt system, and solid steel bolts. Customers say this is a medium-grade safe, but great for the price.
Also consider …
Worth a look is the Winchester Ranger Deluxe 31-7-E Gun Safe. This is a larger Winchester gun safe with a 30-gun capacity. It has two customer reviews, both with 5 star ratings. It is also one of the most expensive options here, selling in the upper thousand dollar range. It can provide up to an hour of fire protection and has the same basic set of features as the safe above.

Cannon Gun Safes: Canon Safe CA23
It has 5 customer reviews, averaging out to 4 out of 5 stars. It provides up to an hour of fire protection and includes a UL-rated electronic lock. (read our post on fire ratings to better understand this feature)
It is protected by an outstanding warranty. It is also very expensive, selling in the neighborhood of $5,000. This is probably not the best choice for most users for this reason, though it may appeal to you if you want the extra features and you can afford the cost.
Also consider …
Have a look at the Cannon Safe P22HR-H1TEC-13 Patriot Series Safe. This Cannon safe is a less expensive option. It also features 60 minutes of fire protection, a Toplite lock, and a 30-gun capacity. Both of these models require batteries, which are included with your purchase.
A Fort Knox gun safe is a great choice if you are looking for a safe for handguns instead of rifles. In particular, consider the very popular Fort Knox FTK-PB Pistol Box Handgun Safe.
Unlike most of the gun safes we looked at on Amazon, this one has an abundance of reviews. More than 140 customers have given it 4.5 out of 5 stars on average.
The mechanical lock is easy to use, and a gas strut helps the door open quickly and easily. Customers love this gun safe because it is so strong and sturdy.
As one review states, “This is built like a tank. You can easily park your car on top of this box without denting it.” Note that this safe does not include a biometric lock.
When you are looking for a high-quality gun safe, you have a number of factors you need to weigh, including price, capacity, materials, and construction, and locking mechanisms. Reading gun safe reviews can help you to select the best gun safe for your needs. As an addendum, make sure you read up on the best practices for using your gun safe as well.
Never store ammunition in your gun safe, even if it is “fireproof.” Be aware of any and all safety issues before you begin using your safe.
