National Biometric Security Project (NBSP) Announces Availability of Comprehensive “Introduction to
Biometrics” Course
Course is the First in a Biometric Training Portfolio that Will Include In-depth Technical Courses and Management
Programs
Washington D.C. 22 March 2006 -- The National Biometric Security Project (NBSP) announced the availability of a new
Introduction to Biometrics Course designed to provide participants with an understanding of biometrics and an appreciation
of biometrics’ contribution to enhanced physical and logical access security
According to Valerie Graves, head of training programs at NBSP’s Test, Research and Data Center in Morgantown
West Virginia, “…the company conducted extensive analyses of biometric community needs to determine what
level of training users, operators, and practitioners would find most beneficial. NBSP then began development of a
curriculum to fill identified gaps in available training. The first result of that effort is an Introduction to
Biometrics Course.”
The stand-alone orientation course covers both management and technical aspects of biometrics, including their
definition, background, issues and a review of the underlying technologies. “The course is designed to
respond to agency or organization requests for a thorough overview of biometrics,” Graves continued. Although
primarily designed to be a 6-hour course, key components have been developed in such a manner so the material, can
be presented in compressed 1-hour and a 3-hour sessions.
Introduction to Biometrics includes the following topics:
Brief history of Biometrics
Foundations of Biometrics
How Biometrics Work
Biometric Applications
Biometric Modalities
Adoption of Biometrics
Biometric Standards
Other issues and concerns
Future View
Course evaluation
The course is presented at NBSP’s training facility in Morgantown, WV, at selected
sites nationwide, and can be conducted at a client facility. Cost of the standard one-day program is $250.00 per attendee.
Group and special rates and arrangements are available on request.
The Introduction to Biometrics Course will be complemented with other, more
technical courses currently being developed by NBSP. These include:
-
A one week Technical Preparation Course to prepare engineers and technicians to design, install and maintain
standard biometric systems.
-
A three-week Biometrician Certification course to certify qualified engineers and technicians in the management of highly complex biometric systems.
In addition to developing the content and materials for each course described above NBSP is pursuing the certification
of each course so that CEU credits may be awarded at the completion of each program.
